Cancer gaining on heart disease as number one killer

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

San Diego county became the latest region where cancer has overtaken heart disease as the number one cause of death, according to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Experts quoted in the article attribute the growing trend to both major advances in preventing and treating cardiovascular health and an older population more prone to cancers associated with the aging process.

A report released in December by the International Agency for Research on Cancer predicted that cancer will be the leading cause of death worldwide by 2010. Cancer has overtaken heart disease as the top killer in several states, including Washington, North Carolina and Minnesota.

The national statistics for cause-of-death are not yet available for 2007 but heart disease has been the number one killer nationally every year since 1900 except for the 1918 flu epidemic. Cancer has been second for much of that time.

Early detection of both diseases, through blood tests for cholesterol, lipid profiles, CRP and triglycerides for heart disease, and various biomarkers for cancers and various tumor markers, has contributed to the treatment of both conditions.
