Cholesterol testing is widely recognized as one of the most important measures of heart health, and because of this, the number of people who seek screening continues to grow, according to a new report from Global Industry Analysts.
The report indicates that the number of people who sought cholesterol testing in 2008 and 2009 increased slightly over previous years despite a severely slumping economy.
Officials said that there are many reasons for this increase, but chief among them is the fact that cholesterol is such an important marker for heart disease risk. The disease kills more people around the world each year than anything else. Additionally, the rates of heart disease are increasing, as the baby boomer generation is growing older.
The report also says that a proliferation in at-home cholesterol testing options has helped more people access screening. These options allow individuals to check their cholesterol levels in the comfort of their own homes, which is an attractive feature for many customers.
The authors of the paper say that they expect the number of people who seek cholesterol testing to continue to increase in the coming years, as the population continues to age and heart disease remains such a pressing concern.
