Common pain relievers may contribute to cardiovascular risks

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Individuals who are taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, also known as NSAIDs, may benefit from talking to their doctor about cholesterol testing, as new research suggests the drugs may contribute to cardiovascular complications.

The Rhode Island Hospital researchers who conducted the study came to their conclusions after testing NSAID medications in pigs fed a high-fat diet. Following several weeks on the regimen, the researchers noted that the animals developed problems with blood flow to the heart.

The team said their findings have important implications, as NSAIDs are among the most common class of medications taken by patients. They include drugs like ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen.

Since the research was conducted in animals, the investigators did not make any recommendations for individuals to stop taking the medications. However, they did point out that doctors should be aware of the possible risks associated with the drugs.

"Our study indicates that physicians should be aware that cholesterol control may be especially important if patients are taking NSAID medications such as naproxen," said Louis Chu, who led the study.
