Expert discusses natural alternatives for lowering cholesterol

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Following unhealthy cholesterol test results, many people are prescribed statin medications. While these drugs are generally a safe and effective way to lower cholesterol levels, they may result in side effects in some people. However, experts say that there are natural ways a person can keep their blood lipids in check without worrying about side effects.

David McMahon, the president of Solana Health, a California-based wellness company, said that he was diagnosed with unhealthy cholesterol in his 40s. A combination of omega-3 fatty acids, red yeast and coenzyme Q10 helped him bring his cholesterol back down to healthy levels.

“Thankfully, through this approach, I didn't have to suffer any of the side effects that have been reported by thousands of people treated with statin therapy,” McMahon said.

Aside from side effects, taking statin medications can be expensive over a lifetime. Once a person begins taking these medications it is extremely difficult for them to ever stop taking them. While statins have a relatively low cost compared to many other medications, the price can begin to add up over the long course of treatment.
