Men should consider seeking cholesterol testing and other measures of heart health to ensure that they do not have cardiovascular risk factors, according to one expert from New York University.
Dr. Stuart Katz, a professor of advanced cardiovascular therapeutics, said that men should focus on cholesterol, blood pressure and body mass index. These are the three factors are most strongly associated with cardiovascular disease.
Additionally, Katz pointed out that these three measures are very responsive to lifestyle changes. By eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise, individuals can significantly improve their cholesterol, blood pressure and body mass index scores. In particular, Katz recommended eating less salt, drinking less alcohol and minimizing stress.
"By empowering men to make small, manageable changes in their lifestyle, such as exercising and eating healthier, they can significantly improve target health numbers such as blood pressure and cholesterol, and help prevent conditions like heart disease," Katz said.
Seeking regular blood pressure and cholesterol testing may be one of the most effective ways for men to stay on top of their heart health and understand the kinds of lifestyle changes they need to make.
