Many with high cholesterol don’t take their medications

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Unhealthy cholesterol test results can put a person at risk for a number of serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke. However, these patients often have low adherence to their prescribed treatments. Experts say that it is important to follow the advice of doctors when heart health is at stake.

Jessica Brueggeman, director of behavioral services at MicroMass Communications in Cary, North Carolina, told UPI that most patients with high cholesterol believe that their condition is caused by hereditary factors and are therefore unlikely to view lifestyle improvements and medication as having much of an impact on their heart health.

However, she said that explaining to these people the benefits of eating right, exercising and taking their medications is important.

"It's vital to convince them that high cholesterol is a serious health threat that can precipitate even more serious health conditions if not treated effectively, then demonstrate how compliance with prescribed therapy, along with changes in diet and exercise, is the proven route to effective treatment," she told the news source.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., according to the American Heart Association.
