Moderate drinking may help heart attack victims

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Many doctors advise their patients to completely give up alcohol after suffering a heart attack, but new research suggests that moderate levels of drinking may help individuals from suffering a reoccurrence of heart problems.

The study followed 325 moderate drinkers who recently suffered a heart attack. The results showed that those who continued their drinking habit were less likely to experience chest pain, and generally had better physical function than those who completely quit drinking. Drinkers also had a lower death rate after three years.

Dr James O'Keefe, lead author of the study, told Reuters that red wine in particular has been linked to better heart health, and that antioxidants in that drink may be one of the reasons for the findings.

"This study suggests that, unless their doctors tell them not to, they can continue to drink and feel good about it," he told the news source.

National Institutes of Health say that individuals who have survived a heart attack are at a higher risk for a second.
