Individuals with unhealthy cholesterol tests are at an elevated risk of heart disease, a condition that kills more people in the U.S. than any other disease.
However, researchers at the University of Leeds have found that a certain steroid currently sold in over-the-counter nutritional supplements may help strengthen the heart, and decrease the risk of suffering heart attacks.
The so-called "fountain-of-youth" steroid has been shown to improve energy, vision and memory. It is a compound that is naturally made in the body, but decreases with age.
Lead researcher, David Beech, said that the steroid can switch on chemical defense mechanisms in blood vessels that ward off the effects of heart disease. That, in conjunction with cholesterol medication and improved diet and exercise, could be an effective way to improve heart health.
"These 'fountain of youth' steroids are relatively cheap to make and some of them are already available as commercial products," he said. "It could be a cost-effective approach to addressing cardiovascular health problems that are becoming epidemic in our society and world-wide."
