Many office workers may be at a high risk of receiving unhealthy cholesterol test results or developing other cardiovascular risk factors. A new study indicates that very few individuals who do desk work meet recommendations for physical activity.
Researchers from Loughborough University surveyed more than 1,000 British workers about their daily exercise habits. The results showed that nearly 70 percent do not meet current guidelines for daily physical activity. The average worker spent 5 hours and 41 minutes each workday sitting down.
Furthermore, individuals who sat for longer periods of time while working were more likely to lead sedentary lives outside of work. There was a strong connection between low levels of physical activity and a higher body mass index, a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
The researchers said that individuals should try to find ways to be more active throughout their day, like getting up from their desk to talk to their coworker rather than sending an email. These small steps throughout the day may add up to a much more active life, and a lower risk of receiving unhealthy cholesterol test results.
