Given the high number of people who struggle with poor heart health, the number of people who receive cholesterol tests could explode over the course of the next five years, according to a new report from market research company Global Industry Analysts.
The report predicts that 2.6 billion cholesterol tests will be ordered worldwide between now and 2017. The researchers cite the aging population and heightened awareness of the important role cholesterol plays in overall heart health.
Cholesterol testing was once done on a periodic basis. However, patients who have cardiovascular risk factors are having their levels checked much more frequently than in the past. At-home testing kits now make it much easier for individuals to monitor their levels on a regular basis.
The conclusions of the report could mean that individuals are more interested than ever before in taking maintenance of their heart health into their own hands. However, the findings may also suggest that more people simply have cardiovascular risk factors today than ever before. Either way, doctors should be prepared to discuss cholesterol test scores with a large number of their patients in the years ahead.
