Individuals who have received unhealthy cholesterol test results may soon have a new treatment available, as a team of researchers recently announced promising results from a new study.
The investigation involved an injectable medication that is intended to lower cholesterol levels in individuals who have not responded to traditional therapies like statin medications. In the clinical trial, men who were given the drug saw their cholesterol levels drop 64 percent more than participants given a placebo.
The drug, which is being developed by the pharmaceutical company Amgen, works by targeting a recently discovered cholesterol regulatory process. This is a different approach than the one taken by statin medications, which work lower cholesterol by blocking the absorption of fats in the intestines. This is why the drug could be useful for those who do not respond to statins.
Results from the study indicated that it failed to improve levels of HDL, or good cholesterol, or triglycerides, which means it may not as effective in individuals who have multiple lipid problems. However, for those whose cardiovascular risk is limited to high LDL cholesterol, the new medication may be beneficial.
