Symptoms of insomnia may increase heart attack risk

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Individuals who experience difficulty sleeping at night may benefit from talking to their doctor about cholesterol testing. New research has shown that insomniacs are significantly more likely to suffer a heart attack.

A team of researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology showed that people who had difficulty falling asleep had a 45 percent higher risk of heart attack. Meanwhile, those who had trouble staying asleep through the night were 30 percent more likely and those who did not wake feeling refreshed had a 27 percent higher risk.

The findings have a great deal of significance, the researchers said, because about 33 percent of the general population experiences at least one of these symptoms of insomnia.

Despite the high prevalence of sleep problems, the team said that insomnia can be treated relatively easily. They recommended that anyone who experiences difficulty getting a good night's sleep talk to a professional who may be able to help. Not only will this improve their sleep, it could help reduce their risk of suffering a heart attack.
