New case study offers guidance on treating testosterone deficiency

Category: Hormones and Metabolism

Many men suffer the symptoms of hormone deficiencies for many years before seeking testosterone testing to confirm the problem. The reason for this is that most people are unaware that loss of energy and sex drive are not necessarily normal parts of aging, rather they are often aspects of a treatable condition.

In order to help more men and their doctors recognize the signs of testosterone deficiency, also known as hypogonadism, a team of researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine recently published a case study of man who had a typical case of the disorder.

The patient initially sought treatment for erectile dysfunction, loss of libido and fatigue. The 52-year-old man was generally in good health, but he had high blood pressure and low levels of testosterone. The researchers said that this is a good example of man who would benefit from testosterone testing and treatment.

"This clinical vignette offers important information for general practitioners and provides practical recommendations for diagnosing testosterone deficiency and the novel treatment approaches that could positively impact the overall health of middle-aged men," said Abdulmaged Traish, who published the case study.
