For any couple that is experiencing difficulty conceiving, both partners should undergo FSH testing to determine if either individual has low fertility. However, a new survey indicates that men are much less likely to interest themselves in fertility treatments than women.
About 42 percent of women who participated in the SpermCheck survey indicated that they had at one time become obsessed with the idea of conceiving a child. However, only about 10 percent of men said the same.
John Herr, one of the experts involved in the study and director of the University of Virginia Center for Research in Contraceptive and Reproductive Health, said that about 50 percent of couples' fertility problems are attributable to low sperm counts in men. Despite this, only about 17 percent of men seek FSH tests or other measures to test their sperm count.
In fact, 49 percent of women who responded to the survey said their male partners were not eager to have their sperm counts tested. Overcoming this kind of disinterest in FSH testing in men may play an important role in couples' efforts to conceive.
