Costco removes frozen berries from shelves after hepatitis A outbreak

Category: Kidney Diseases

Eight states across the U.S. have reported increases in hepatitis A diagnoses - a spike in the condition that has been linked to a specific brand of berries sold in Costco and Harris Teeter stores, HealthDay News reported.

As of June 10, 2013, 87 people have been affected by the outbreak in the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all of infected individuals purchased and may have consumed Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend frozen berry and pomegranate mix.

The Oregonian reported that Costco has sold nearly 333,000 packages of the Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend across the nation. The Oregon-based company has since recalled the mix, while Costco has removed it from shelves. Both are urging consumers to return frozen blends purchased as far back as February 2013.

The news source has reported that this product by Townsend Farms features foods from the U.S., Argentina, Chile and Turkey.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the symptoms of hepatitis A include fatigue, muscle soreness, fever, loss of appetite, dark yellow urine and jaundice.

The World Health Organization reported that signs of the condition can start to manifest physically within 14 to 28 days of infection.

For individuals who are concerned about the risks of hepatitis A transmission, ordering a lab test online can help alleviate stress and produce verifiable and accurate results.

Liver panels, which can be used to determine the health of a liver, are typically recommended for those who fear they may be affected by a disease in that vital organ.
