Former Missouri University basketball star DeMarre Carroll was drafted in the first round by the Memphis Grizzlies, despite concern by some over the recent revelation that he was diagnosed with liver disease a few years ago.
Carroll, who earned the nickname "Junkyard Dog" during his college career, has insisted that his play should calm any fears that his health will impact his performance and that his disease has been controlled since it was diagnosed.
"It hasn't been a factor, and from what the doctor told me it isn't going to be a factor until later down my road - if it ever is," Carroll told the New York Times before he was drafted.
The new Grizzlies star prospect said he takes medication once every two to three weeks and goes in for liver disease tests once every year or so. According to doctors he may need to have a liver transplant in 25 to 30 years, but that isn't certain.
That would be well beyond the normal career length of an NBA player, which is about 5 years according to College Basketball News. The longest career in the modern NBA was that of Robert Parish, who played 21-seasons until the age of 44.
