A new report from the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease and Trust for Americas Health (TFAH) states that more liver testing is needed to help individuals who are infected with hepatitis avoid further complications, such as cirrhosis and liver failure.
The report states that care for individuals who have contracted hepatitis is lacking, and that this is contributing to an increase in liver-related complications. If left untreated, these conditions can lead to death.
"HBV and HCV are ticking time bombs. If we don't act now to diagnose the millions of Baby Boomers and others, we'll be too late to spare them from developing serious liver diseases. We'll all end up paying the price, since Medicare and Medicaid will end up picking up the tab for much of the care," said Jeff Levi, executive director of TFAH.
He added that the cost of liver cancer treatment and liver transplants far exceed treatment for early stage hepatitis infections, and that investing in these therapies could save Medicare and Medicaid millions.
