Despite the fact that studies have linked regular PSA testing to lower levels of prostate cancer, some experts feel that too few men are seeking the procedure. Several obstacles stand in the way of getting more men tested, including education, access and interest in prostate health.
In an effort to tackle these problems, some health groups now offer free testing to men, regardless of whether they have insurance. They believe that this will help men overcome some of the hurdles that stand between them and regular testing.
For example, the Project to End Prostate Cancer is currently offering free PSA testing to men across the country as part of its Drive Against Prostate Cancer. The group will provide the procedure in its mobile testing units in which men will be able to arrive without an appointment. The group will also be providing televisions for men to watch while they wait for their results.
The testing could potentially help save lives, as the Centers For Disease Control and Preventions say that prostate cancer is one of the most common chronic illnesses among men.
