Nationwide event seeks to raise awareness of prostate cancer

In order to raise money for treating and researching prostate cancer and encourage more men to seek PSA testing, organizers are planning to hold a nationwide men's health event this weekend that will seek to raise awareness of this important issue.

The Great Prostate Cancer Challenge is being organized by ZERO The Project to End Prostate Cancer and will feature road races, golf tournaments, car shows and other activities in dozens of cities across the country.

Last year, the event raised just short of $1 million dollars to put toward the cause. Officials said that they are hoping to reach a similar figure this year.

"We're more than doubling the number of activities from last year as the idea of creating close-knit community events that join together athletes, doctors, prostate cancer patients and the family and friends who care about them is really catching on," said Dr. Sanford Siegel, a urologist who founded the nationwide event.

He added that he hopes the day's activities will help more individuals understand that men don't have to die from prostate cancer.
