A new advertisement aimed at adults over 55 has caused a bit of a stir for its depiction of adult sexuality. However, experts say this type of discussion is necessary to educate older adults on the importance of practicing safe sex and STD testing.
The ad, which was commissioned by SaferSex4Seniors.org has the tagline, "There are many ways to do it. There is only way to do it safely." The group said that many older adults are not familiar with safe sex practices, which may account for why sexually transmitted disease rates are increasing among this group.
"Whether the younger generation likes it or not, our grandparents are having sex. We wanted to make a sexy ad that encourages seniors to enjoy their sex lives - safely," said Matt Eastwood, of DDB New York, which developed the ad. "Some experts hypothesize that this epidemic of STDs among senior citizens is a result of growing up in an age before sex education was the status quo."
The advertisement is a response to rising STD rates among seniors. For example, the rate of syphilis climbed 71 percent in Florida between 2005 and 2009 in people over 65.
