Group works to distribute condoms to California youths

Category: Sexually Transmitted Diseases

In addition to STD testing, safe sex practices are among the best ways to stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. An initiative in California is seeking to make it easier for young people to be safer when they decide to engage in sex.

The Condom Access Project, launched by the California Family Health Council, enables teens to go online to a secure website and anonymously request a package of 10 free condoms, according to Contemporary Pediatrics.

Officials from the program said that young people are the most likely to contract a sexually transmitted disease in part because there are many barriers between them and safe sexual practices, including misinformation and a lack of knowledge of where to obtain condoms.

"[The] Condom Access Project breaks down those barriers by providing free condoms to teens in a way that is both confidential and teen-friendly and meets them where they are - online and at home," said Julie Rabinovitz.

Despite representing only about 25 percent of the sexually experienced population, individuals between the ages of 15 and 24 receive about half of all positive STD tests, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
