About half of all positive STD tests are given to individuals between the ages of 15 and 24, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, this does not mean that young adults are the only ones at risk.
Data show that STD rates are climbing among seniors. Experts say that this is largely because older adults are more active than in generations past but are less likely than young people to use protection.
In response to this trend, the group SaferSex4Seniors.org recently released a new online public service announcement campaign targeting older adults, according to CBS News. The videos show fully clothed seniors engaging in a number of different sex positions. Eventually it cuts to statistics that highlight the depth of the STD problem among seniors.
The news source reports that men over the age of 50 are six times less likely to use a condom during sex than men in their 20s. Combined with high rates of sexual activity among older adults, this contributes to a very high risk of receiving a positive STD test.
