Online dating may be a factor in the spread of STDs

Category: Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Online dating can be a great way for singles to meet other people who share their interests and form meaningful relationships. However, experts say that it may also be contributing to a rise in the number of people receiving positive STD tests.

Pam Krause, the director of the Calgary Sexual Health Center, told the National Journal that people tend to develop intimate feelings for others very quickly online. This increases the chances that they will jump into sexual activity without really knowing much about their partner's sexual history.

"By the time you meet and start having sexual activity, perhaps you have this sense that you're really comfortable and you know this person well," she told the news source. "So there's no need to negotiate safer sex."

Both Match.com and EHarmoney.com, two of the largest online dating networks in the U.S., claim to have around 20 million users. This suggests that many individuals may be at risk for receiving a positive STD test after becoming sexually active with a date.
