Due to the fact that people are staying sexually active later into life, medical professionals are reporting that there is a greater demand for STD testing from senior citizens.
In light of this increased demand, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is considering adding STD testing coverage to the health insurance plans that the agency offers to seniors, according to My News 4. The move comes in response to climbing infection rates among this demographic.
"Older people are not interested in sex, not true...older people don't have sex, not true," Dr. Jeffrey Gingold, medical director at Manor Care Health Services in Reno, Nevada, told the news source. "There's been some wonderful studies showing people are active later in life and like to stay active in their 70s, 80s and 90s."
He added that the proposal makes good sense because it recognizes the fact that older people are no different than anyone else.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that frequent STD testing is the most effective way to prevent the spread of infections.
