States amend prescription laws to stop STD spread

Category: Sexually Transmitted Diseases

In an effort to slow the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, many states are considering legislation that would allow doctors to prescribe medication for the partners of those who have received a positive STD test without the need for their partner to see a doctor.

A measure was recently passed in Missouri that will allow doctors to prescribe medication to the partners of those who are infected, which many hope will curb increasing rates.

Paula Gianino of Planned Parenthood told the St. Louis Dispatch that less than half the number of people infected with gonorrhea and Chlamydia seek treatment for the diseases, allowing them to be spread.

"When you have a patient in your health center who has tested positive for an STD, it is the perfect opportunity to be able to offer treatment to the patient's partner," she told the news source. "We believe that this will give us just another terribly important tool to help try to curb the epidemic rates."

Missouri joins several other states across the country that currently allow doctors to prescribe medicine to the partners of patients, including California, Arizona and Massachusetts.
