Low vitamin D levels may lead to arterial problems in children

Category: Vitamin D Deficiency-Diagnosis and Treatment

Vitamin D testing may provide an important view to the heart health of young people, as new research has found that low levels of the nutrient may increase the risk of vascular complication that can lead to heart disease later in life.

A team of researchers from Children's Mercy Hospital and Clinics in Kansas City, Missouri, reported at the recent meeting of the American Heart Association that children with low levels of vitamin are more likely to have thicker, stiffer arteries, according to MedPage Today. This reduce the ability of blood vessels to manage blood flow appropriately.

"This gives rise to the speculation that though they might not have structural damage and plaque in the carotid arteries as yet, it is possible that they have functional damage and their vessels are stiffer," lead researcher Geetha Raghuveer told the news source.

The findings could have important implications for the future heart health of many young people. A 2004 study published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine showed that more than 24 percent of youths are vitamin D deficient. This could leave millions of adolescents exposed to a high risk of heart disease later in life.
