Sandwich chain announces it will add vitamin D to its bread

Category: Vitamin D Deficiency-Diagnosis and Treatment

Individuals who have received unhealthy vitamin D test results may benefit from a meal out at the sandwich chain Subway. The company recently announced that it will begin supplementing its bread with vitamin D and calcium.

Nation’s Restaurant News reports that the bread in a six-inch sub will now contain about 30 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin D and 20 percent of calcium. This is roughly the equivalent of a glass of milk.

“We’re always looking at ways we can improve the nutrition quality of our products,” Lanette Kovachi, Subway’s corporate dietitian, told the news source.

Subway is already known as one of the most nutritious options when it comes to fast food. The restaurant has a number of low-fat menu choices and compares favorably to other chains in terms of calories.

Still, experts told the Huffington Post that it is generally better to get nutrients like these from whole foods rather than enriched items. While adding these elements to bread is no doubt a positive nutritional step, individuals shouldn’t expect to get all of their nutrients from these products.
