Despite recent criticism that suggests that PSA testing may lead to over-treatment of prostate growths will never cause damage, many experts still claim that the procedure is a necessary part of men's health that has saved millions of lives.
Michael Finger, a urologist in the Rio Grande area of Texas, told ValleyCentral.com that he has seen PSA testing save many of his patient's lives. However, many men are still reluctant to seek the procedure because they are worried about discomfort or are afraid something will be discovered.
"Some of the men are a little apprehensive about coming into their doctors to get screened for prostate cancer and probably more so here than I've seen in other areas of the country, he told the news source. "The whole idea is to catch this before prostate [cancer] becomes a disease that spreads elsewhere to the body."
Prostate cancer can be treated easily when it is discovered early on. However, it can become deadly if it is left untreated and allowed to spread. PSA testing is one of the surest ways to discover small problems before they grow out of control.
