In recent weeks, NFL teams across the country donned pink in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While the move is sure to raise public consciousness of the problem, some prostate cancer advocacy groups are calling on the league to give similar treatment to their cause.
Dan Zenka, vice president of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, said that far too few men are aware of the importance of regular PSA testing, despite the fact that the disease affects nearly as many men as the number of women affected by breast cancer.
"Prostate cancer is to men what breast cancer is to women," he said. "Football is an American family sport and we hope the NFL will join us in helping to protect both men and women. Families need healthy fathers and brothers, as well as mothers and sisters."
His group has started a petition that has gathered more than 1,500 signatures as part of its efforts to get the NFL to start a similar prostate cancer awareness program.
