PSA testing has become a highly contentious issue in recent years. Some health professionals have argued that the procedure leads to the detection and treatment of smaller growths on the prostate that are unlikely to develop into dangerous cancer. However, others in the medical profession are voicing their support for the test, saying that it is still the most effective tool for detecting problems.
Peter Scardino, chairman of Surgery and head of the Prostate Cancer Program at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, told MyFoxNewYork that the decision to seek PSA testing depends on an individual's overall health and age.
"If I look at all the evidence together, I would say if your life expectancy is 10 years, forget about it. You don't need to worry about prostate cancer," he told the news source. "If your life expectancy is 15, 20 years or longer, then there is a lot of reason PSA testing can identify dangerous cancers long before they would spread."
The National Cancer Institute recommends that individuals who are concerned about prostate cancer speak with their doctors about PSA testing.
