Men with prostate cancer may be more likely to live beyond 15 years if they have surgery soon after diagnosis, even individuals whose PSA test results indicate that they are in a low-risk group, according to a new study from a team of Swedish researchers.
After following 695 men who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and chose either radical prostatectomy or watchful waiting, the researchers reported in the New England Journal of Medicine that those in the surgery group had a much better survival rate.
After a period of 15 years, the researchers found that 48 percent of the men in the surgery group had died, while 58 percent of those in the watchful waiting group had passed.
However, because of the facts that surgery can present significant side effects to men and prostate cancer is generally slow moving, the researchers said that doctors should still assess risks and benefits from the two treatment options for each individual patient.
The findings could help guide the decisions of men and their doctors regarding the most effective treatment options.
