After a PSA test reveals that a man has benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, there are many treatment options to be considered. However, a new investigation from University of California, San Diego researchers indicates that many men may not be getting the treatment that they need.
While the condition is unlikely to be life-threatening, it can still cause major side effects that disrupt a man's quality of life. It can cause urinary tract infections, which may eventually lead to kidney failure if left untreated.
After examining discharge records from a set for men treated for BPH, the researchers found that while incidences of the disease and acute symptoms are increasing, fewer men are being treated with surgery for the condition.
"It is imperative that patients be treated promptly if the drugs aren't working," said Kevin McVary, who led the study. "In many cases, surgical treatment for BPH can help prevent urinary retention, which can ultimately lead to acute renal failure that can be life-threatening."
There are many surgical options to treat the condition, including some minimally invasive ones.
