Lifestyle factors may contribute to half of all new Alzheimer's disease cases

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

By improving cholesterol test scores and other modifiable lifestyle factors, a team of researchers says it may be possible to prevent up to half of all new cases of Alzheimer's disease.

Medical professionals from the San Francisco VA Medical Center said that many of the factors that contribute to heart disease and diabetes are also the leading causes of the neurodegenerative condition. The majority of these issues are completely modifiable.

After viewing data from previously published studies, the researchers found that lifestyle factors including smoking, physical inactivity, obesity, high blood pressure, depression and low levels of education are most closely associated with Alzheimer's risk.

"What's exciting is that this suggests that some very simple lifestyle changes, such as increasing physical activity and quitting smoking, could have a tremendous impact on preventing Alzheimer's and other dementias in the United States and worldwide," said Deborah Barnes, the study's principle investigator.

She added that if more attention was paid to these risk factors it could reduce the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease by as much as 50 percent.
