Expert: Couples should talk about STD testing

Category: Sexually Transmitted Diseases

For those who are starting a new relationship, STD testing may play an important role in helping both partners feel safe that neither has an infection that could potentially be spread. However, it can still be difficult to ask a new partner to get tested.

Obstetrician and Gynecologist Angela Martin told the Florida Times-Union that one of the best ways to bring the subject up is to address it directly. Simply asking the other person if they have ever had a sexually transmitted disease is an effective way to broach the subject. Next, testing should be discussed.

"Relationships take time to develop. Ideally, it's wise to build up a level of trust and open communication with your partner so that the topic of STDs can be brought up in a non-judgmental fashion," she told the news source. "It would be best to have this discussion with your partner before engaging in sexual behavior."

Once the topic is brought up, couples may be able to seek STD testing together. This can give both parties important peace of mind. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that screening is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of infections.
