Dietary changes may help young people improve cardiovascular health

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

A healthy diet may help young people improve their cholesterol test results later in life, according to a new study out of the Fox Chase Cancer Center.

The findings may have important implications for the treatment of childhood obesity, which is becoming a serious problem. Children who are overweight tend to carry extra weight into adulthood, which puts them at a high risk for cardiovascular conditions. Losing weight is key to improving cardio-metabolic health, but this can be difficult to accomplish.

However, the new study showed that it is possible. The researchers analyzed the health of 230 women between the ages of 25 and 29. Each individual had previously participated in a study that asked them to eat less fat and more fiber during adolescence.

The results showed that those who successfully made this dietary change during childhood had healthier blood sugar levels, lower blood pressure and better regulated cholesterol as adults.

This indicates that participation in a concentrated dietary intervention may enable overweight young people to improve their health and avoid cardiovascular complications later in life.
