Many individuals who have received unhealthy cholesterol test results have been advised to drink red wine in moderation. Numerous studies have shown that this beverage has positive effects on heart health. However, these studies have largely been unable to determine if the cardiovascular effects of red wine can be attributed to its alcohol content or its micronutrients.
Now, a new study from a team of Spanish researchers has confirmed that both aspects of red wine may contribute to good overall heart health. The team made this determination by taking a new approach in their investigation.
The researchers asked to groups of participants to consume 30 grams of alcohol per day over a one-month period. One group drank the alcohol in the form of red wine, another in the form of gin. A third group received a comparable quantity of dealcoholized red wine.
The results showed that participants in all three groups exhibited signs of diminished inflammation in their cardiovascular systems. This suggests that alcohol and the micronutrients in red wine may independently benefit heart health.
