Individuals who have received unhealthy cholesterol test results may benefit from getting more fiber in their diet, as a team of experts is warning that far too many fail to consume adequate amounts of this heart-healthy nutrient.
Scientists from the Rain Forest Research Institute in India reported in the International Journal of Food Safety, Nutrition and Public Health that the typical Western-style diet relies mainly on red meat, dairy and a number of other foods that contain inadequate amounts of fiber. This may mean that few people get enough fiber in the diet.
The researchers pointed out that fiber has been shown to directly reduce cholesterol levels. Furthermore, it is linked to lower rates of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and a range of other health problems.
"Consuming adequate quantities of dietary fiber can lead to improvements in gastrointestinal health, and reduction in susceptibility to diseases such as diverticular disease, heart disease, colon cancer, and diabetes. Increased consumption has also been associated with increased satiety and weight loss," the researchers wrote in their report.
For those who have received unhealthy cholesterol test results, adding more fiber to their diet may have a major impact.
