Statins may increase diabetes risk

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Statin medication may significantly improve a woman's cholesterol test scores, but the drugs may also increase her risk of being diagnosed with diabetes, according to a new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

The results are based on a review of the medical histories of more than 150,000 women, none of whom had diabetes at the beginning of the study period. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, tracked the health of these women for three years, assessing any metabolic changes.

Results from the study indicated that women who took statins to lower their cholesterol were significantly more likely to develop diabetes during the study period.

Still, the researchers said they would not recommend that any woman stop taking her medications. Statins lower cholesterol, which is a major risk factor for heart disease. Diabetics and those at risk for the condition have much higher rates of heart disease. Stopping statin therapy may increase this risk.

Furthermore, the findings are in a relatively early stage, and more research is needed before definitive recommendations can be made, the team said.
