Increased exercise linked to lower rates of immobility among older diabetics

Category: Diabetes

While weight loss and physical activity can greatly improve the health of a person who has received a blood test indicating they have diabetes, many individuals with the condition who are overweight may find it difficult to be physically active due to impaired mobility. However, a new study highlights how important it is for these individuals to get more exercise.

In a study involving more than 5,000 individuals, a team of researchers from Wake Forest University found that increased physical activity and weight loss helped halt declines in mobility associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes.

"This research confirms how important losing weight and increasing physical activity are in the treatment of mobility-related problems among people with type 2 diabetes as they age," said lead researcher Jack Rejeski.

Increasing physical activity may seem like a catch-22 for a person who already has mobility problems associated with obesity and diabetes. However, given the health benefits linked to exercise, individuals may benefit from finding some way to become more active. This could help them maintain their mobility and independence into old age.
