There may be many reasons why a man would receive FSH test results indicating low fertility, but a new study suggests that lifestyle factors commonly assumed to affect fertility are not as influential as previously thought.
The researchers found that smoking, obesity and recreational drug use, which are often thought to impair fertility, do not play as big a role as previously thought. This led the team to suggest that common fertility counseling guidelines be adjusted.
For the study, a team of British researchers surveyed more than 2,000 men about their lifestyle habits and assessed each participant's fertility levels. The results showed that smoking, obesity and drug use do not impair fertility, but testicular surgery, black ancestry, working in manual labor, not wearing boxer shorts and previously conceiving do diminish fertility.
"This potentially overturns much of the current advice given to men about how they might improve their fertility and suggests that many common lifestyle risks may not be as important as we previously thought," said lead researcher Andrew Povey, of the University of Manchester.
