An FSH test can determine the level of a man's fertility, but it is not always capable of identifying the cause of impaired fertility. New research may help explain some of the more mysterious cases and also determine whether a man's infertility can be reversed.
Investigators from the Belvitge Biomedical Research Institute in Spain examined samples from sperm donors, all of which were confirmed to have normal seminal quality. They found that sperm that was unable to fertilize eggs had four specific genetic variations.
The researchers said that testing sperm samples for these variations could help determine whether a man's sperm will be able to successfully fertilize an egg. Testing for these genetic characteristics could help identify the ultimate cause of a couple's inability to conceive a child, enabling the individuals to decide how best to proceed.
Experts say that about 20 percent of all couples' fertility problems go unexplained. Identifying genetic flaws in a man's sperm could help resolve many of these cases. If a genetic flaw is spotted, couples may be able to look for a sperm donor or other options.
