Many individuals who suffer heart attacks have had unhealthy cholesterol tests. However, experts say that high cholesterol, in and of itself, is not necessarily the cause of cardiovascular events. Addressing the real cause may be key to preventing heart attacks in the future.
Dr. Steven Hotze, who runs a wellness center, said that the majority of people who suffer heart attacks show signs of coronary artery disease, a condition marked by high levels of inflammation in the blood vessels.
Despite this, many people take cholesterol-lowering statin medications. While this may address a symptom of heart attack risk, it may not always reduce a person's odds of suffering cardiovascular disease.
"Everyone including conventional physicians is fixated on lowering high cholesterol levels, but in truth high cholesterol is not the underlying cause," Dr. Hotze said. "While Americans are focused on a quick fix to lower cholesterol levels, the real killer is overlooked. The cause of heart disease is inflammation and damage that causes weakness in the blood vessels."
He recommended that a diet rich in a number of minerals and vitamins may be among the best ways to support strong heart health.
