There is general consensus that cholesterol testing plays an important role in managing a person's heart health. However, experts continue to disagree about which types of screening methods are the most effective.
Dr. Danielle Duffy told Medscape that there are two basic types of cholesterol testing. Traditional screening involves measuring the amount of cholesterol within lipid particles. However, newer, more advanced screening procedures now look at the concentration of lipid particles in the blood.
Experts are divided over which method delivers the best results, Dr. Duffy told the news source. Additionally, clinical studies have provided differing results, which have only contributed to the confusion.
A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that about 13 percent of adults in the U.S. have unhealthy cholesterol, so there is a clear need for individuals to understand their risk factors. If one round of cholesterol testing delivers mixed results, individuals may want to consider trying the other type just to be sure.
When individuals have more complete pictures of cholesterol levels, it enables them to make smarter decisions about medications and their lifestyle.
