Simple steps can make dramatic improvements in cholesterol

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., and high cholesterol is one of the leading causes of the condition. Despite these facts, relatively few people take steps in their everyday lives to improve their cholesterol test scores.

Dr. Michael Roizen, chairman of the Wellness Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, said that there are some relatively simple things that people can do to drastically reduce their cholesterol levels and minimize their risk of heart disease. Consuming more fiber is near the top of his list.

"I often see that people are not getting enough fiber in their daily diets. Most Americans only get 10 to 15 grams of fiber per day, versus the recommended 20 to 35 grams," he said. "That's why one of my five tips is to supplement your diet with psyllium fiber, which is proven to help lower cholesterol."

Additionally, he recommends exercising more, avoiding fats and sugars and increasing weekly intake of omega-3 fatty acids. Following these simple guidelines can help make a major improvement in heart health and keep cholesterol test scores in check.
