Individuals who have high blood pressure may benefit from vitamin D testing, as new research indicates that many individuals with hypertension may benefit from supplementation with the nutrient.
The Wayne State University researchers who conducted the study told Renal and Urology News that the finding could point to a simple and inexpensive way to treat a health problem that has become extremely common and can be very dangerous.
Their study examined the effects of supplementation in 648 individuals with high blood pressure. The results showed that those who received supplements containing 2,000 international units or more of vitamin D experienced the most significant improvements in blood pressure.
"The findings, if confirmed in future studies, will have huge therapeutic and public health implications because vitamin D can potentially be a very useful adjunct to conventional antihypertensive treatment," lead researcher John Flack told the news source.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 33 percent of U.S. adults have high blood pressure. Similarly, the agency says that about a third of the population has low levels of vitamin D.
