Individuals who have been taking selenium supplements to reduce their risk of receiving a positive PSA test for prostate cancer may be disappointed by the findings of a new study from a team of German researchers. They found that the nutrient provides little protection against the disease.
Selenium has garnered much attention in recent years for its cancer-fighting properties. Many studies have been conducted to quantify these potential benefits and some have shown promising results, prompting many health experts to highlight its benefits.
However, after reviewing the results of 49 of these studies, the scientists from the Institute for Transdisciplinary Research who led the current investigation found little evidence to support claims of selenium fighting prostate cancer.
"We could find no evidence to recommend regular intake of selenium supplements for cancer prevention in people whether or not they already have enough selenium," said Gabriele Dennert, who led the study.
The results also showed that selenium offered little protection from skin cancer. Together with prostate cancer, they are two of the most common forms of the disease. If selenium doesn't protect against these types of tumors, its benefits may be called into question.
