Following unhealthy cholesterol test results, individuals are often advised to take statin medications. However, experts say that many people fail to follow through on this advice, which may cost the healthcare industry billions of dollars each year and contribute to the death and poor health of millions of people.
A recent article appearing in the Wall Street Journal pointed out that between 20 and 30 percent of patients never fill their prescriptions at all. Even more people fail to take their medications as prescribed.
The news source cited evidence suggesting that poor medication adherence costs the U.S. $290 billion in treatment expenses that could have been avoided if individuals had simply taken their medication as prescribed.
Low medication adherence is a particularly troubling problem among individuals who have received unhealthy cholesterol test results. Heart disease is by far the leading cause of death and one of the most costly conditions to treat. However, statin medications are an effective way to lower unhealthy cholesterol levels, which significantly reduces the risk of a heart attack.
